In advance of the release of a new video game expansion in 2027, CD Projekt RED (CDR.WA) announced late on Tuesday that it will release a remastered edition of its 2015 hit game “The Witcher 3” on September 29.
At the Opening Nite Live of the largest video game trade exhibition in the world, Gamescom, Poland’s largest video game developer unveiled a trailer for “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered” and a teaser trailer for its impending third expansion, “Songs of the Past”.
The expansion’s 2027 launch was confirmed, but no release date was given.
With over 65 million copies sold since its release, “The Witcher 3” is one of the best-selling books in history and has won over 250 Game of the Year honors.
In a note to investors, Erste Group analyst Krzysztof Tkocz stated, “We anticipate that the remaster launch will have a significant positive impact on the company’s fourth quarter results and help to further expand The Witcher 3 installed base ahead of the release of Songs of the Past, potentially to 70-75 million copies by then.”
All owners of the original game will be able to download the remastered version for free on GOG, Steam, the Epic Games Store, the PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, a native version of the game will be released for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The two current expansions to “The Witcher 3” will be available for free to all current owners of the main game, and the remastered edition will include both of them.
Given that many developers release them as distinct, premium goods, Tkocz noted that providing the remaster for free should further increase users’ faith in the firm.
