African Startups Raise $1.5B in H1 2026 as Kenya Leads Funding Surge African Startups Raise $1.5B in H1 2026 as Kenya Leads Funding Surge

There has been an increase in equity funding for African start-ups, exceeding $1.5 billion across 137 deals in the first half of 2026. This development indicates a turnaround in investment in the region as well as confidence in the prospects of the African economy. African nations like Kenya are capitalizing on the trends as they look to attract more investments to the region.

The amount raised grew by 26.5% to $705 million across 59 deals in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Egypt took the lead in fundraising with $190 million, followed by South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria with $157 million, $94 million, and $78 million respectively. In addition, debt financing now overtakes equity as the preferred method of raising funds for the first time.

The main reason for the jump in fundraising was triggered by the $215 million raised by Spiro in June 2026. Consequently, the overall fundraising in the first half of the year reached $1.3 billion by early June. Notably, some of the significant investments include the $5.5 million raised by Davis AI in Morocco as well as the $2.65 million seed investment in South Africa’s Shiprazor. The latter is a logistics company that makes it easier to navigate the challenging e-commerce landscape. In addition to logistics, fintech and energy & water were the second and third most funded sectors with $221 million and $141 million.

Africa’s best-known businesspeople are also playing a significant role in the region’s economic growth. For example, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has been diversifying his business interests away from energy to agriculture while Koos Bekker continues to dominate South Africa as the founder of Naspers Group. These individuals have extensive business networks both locally and internationally, giving them an advantage over many of their contemporaries.
