Strive Masiyiwa Unveils Billion-Dollar AI Tech Strategy Transforming African Startups
Africa entrepreneurship and technology is set to grow significantly due to the efforts of African industrialist Strive Masiyiwa. The industrialist’s company is to spend $720 million developing the first artificial intelligence (AI) ‘factories’ in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco. The project will see Strive Masiyiwa, founder, and Executive Chairman of Econet Global and Cassava Technologies, build an interconnected network of sovereign AI cloud data centers using cutting-edge graphics processing units made by Nvidia.
Strive Masiyiwa is working to position Africa as a significant producer of ‘Made in Africa’ technologies. His move will enable regional African start-up companies to solve various financial, agricultural, and medical problems. African start-ups have had a hard time affording cloud computing resources. Incurring lower costs using local technology resources will see regional developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs benefit from easily accessible, high-end computational tools.
Africa has seen the rise of some business titans and significant investment funds. For instance, Flutterwave founder and CEO Olugbenga Agboola is leveraging his experience and reputation to scale down his fintech platform globally. His company has enabled financial transactions in Africa to become more accessible, cheaper, and easier in general. For instance, agricultural technology company Apollo Agriculture in Kenya is using AI-powered data analytics to help local farmers make better business decisions in their respective farming undertakings. Similarly, African business leaders such as Aliko Dangote and Patrice Motsepe are beginning to invest in diverse enterprises including technology to add to their extensive business empires in steel manufacturing, mining, and energy among others.
